How to Save on Your Electric Bill in the Summer Months

As temperatures rise, so can your electric bill. But with a few smart strategies, you can stay cool without burning through your budget. Here are some effective ways to cut costs and keep your home energy-efficient all summer long.

1. Optimize Your Air Conditioning

Your AC is likely the biggest contributor to your summer energy bill. To make it work smarter:

  • Choose the right size unit: An oversized AC cools too quickly without removing humidity, while an undersized one overworks. Use online BTU calculators or consult a professional for central systems.
  • Clean or replace filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder.
  • Raise the thermostat: Set it a few degrees higher when you're home, and even higher when you're away. Every degree can save up to 3% on cooling costs.

2. Use Fans Strategically

Ceiling fans can make a room feel up to 4°F cooler. Just make sure they’re spinning counterclockwise in summer to push cool air down. This allows you to raise the thermostat without sacrificing comfort.

3. Block the Heat

  • Close blinds and curtains during the hottest parts of the day, especially on south- and west-facing windows.
  • Install reflective window film or use blackout curtains to reduce heat gain.

4. Seal and Insulate

Even in summer, sealing leaks around doors and windows helps keep cool air in and hot air out. Weatherstripping and caulking are inexpensive fixes that can make a big difference.

5. Limit Heat-Generating Activities

  • Cook outside or use a microwave instead of the oven.
  • Run appliances like dishwashers and dryers at night when it’s cooler.
  • Switch to LED bulbs, which emit less heat and use less energy.

6. Consider Smart Upgrades

  • Smart thermostats learn your habits and adjust cooling automatically.
  • Energy-efficient appliances may cost more upfront but save significantly over time.
