Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, powering essential devices such as laptops, lawn equipment, scooters/e-bikes, toys, toothbrushes, e-cigarettes and even smart phones. Wayne Insurance Group wants you and your family to safely prevent potential fires or explosions from these types of batteries as they store a large amount of energy in a small amount of space.
The following short video from the Fire Safety Research Institute demonstrates how even a single lithium-ion battery can cause a fire or explosion if not properly handled:
Here are a few ways to prevent fires from lithium-ion batteries:
Storing and Charging lithium-ion batteries:
- Always follow manufacturer’s instructions for storing and charging.
- IMPORTANT: Unplug batteries once fully charged (do not leave them plugged in continuously)
- IMPORTANT: Plug directly into an outlet instead of using extension cords or power strips to avoid overheating
- Do not overload outlets with multiple chargers
- Store at room temperature
- Store away from an exit door to allow easier escape if a fire does occur
pROPERLY DISPOSE Of lithium-ion batteries:
- Do not place lithium-ion batteries in trash or recycle bins as they have the potential to ignite in trash receptacles
- Instead, locate collection sites in your community and check with local authorities to determine where you can properly discard your batteries
When purchasing lithium-ion batteries:
- Purchase only UL-certified products.
- Only buy the correct charger and power cord for the battery.
- Check for any damage before you buy (or return if damage is found after purchase).
